Dealers of Hawley Antique Exchange Donate Book

HAWLEY - The dealers of the Hawley Antique Exchange presented the art book at the Hawley Library with a copy of the book "The Collectible Maxfield Parrish," which features a comprehensive collection of the works of the artist-illustrator who worked from the late 1890's until his death in the 1960's.

Parrish is known for works that were colorful, skillfully rendered and presented every day scenes of his times, sometimes with a touch of humor.

Although the artist's name was not well known during his lifetime, representations of his work were already familiar to Americans in the early 20th century since many of them were adapted as illustrations and used as calendars, art prints, event posters, book covers and illustrations and postcards.

In addition, pictures by Maxfield Parrish were used as covers for "Ladies Home Journal", "Colliers," and "Life" magazines and for

advertisements for such products as Columbia Bicycles, Colgate's Cashmere Bouquet Toilet Soap, and Swift Premium Ham.

Shown here at left as she presents "The Collectible Maxfield Parrish" is Linda Slocum.  Library manager Maura Rottmund is pictured at right, with library board member and volunteer Mary Anne Teeter at center.

Linda Slocum, representing the Antique Exchange Dealers, delivered the book to the library and commented that the Parrish book was chosen because his illustrations were so widely distributed in the early 20th century and many people would probably recall seeing examples of his work in their childhood homes.

In recent years, Parrish and his works have become increasingly

popular, according to Slocum who went on to say, "The dealers of the

Hawley Antique Exchange feel strongly that, as members of the

Hawley business community, we should take it upon ourselves to support the Hawley Library in creative ways."  Noting that earlier this year, as part of their efforts to work with the library to support interest in the arts and antiques, the Antique Exchange dealers sponsored an exhibit of 1940's books, all supplied by Exchange dealers.

"We're looking ahead to donating other books in addition to further planned exhibits," Ms. Slocum said.
